Make marvellous meals with Atlantic mackerel

As well as our popular tuna and sardines, our Atlantic mackerel fillets are the perfect base for any protein-filled meal

Our Atlantic mackerel fillets are growing in popularity all the time as people realise they are just as tasty and nutritious as our tuna and our sardines! In these days of eating pure food that is not ultra-processed our tinned fish dishes are becoming the protein-filled staple of choice for many!

At Shines Seafood, a family-run business in the heart of Killybegs in Co Donegal, we have built our reputation on quality, sustainability, and a deep connection to Irish fishing. While we started with Irish tuna and Irish sardines, we have greatly expanded our range over the years to include new fish products like our pates and lots of merchandise.

Another addition has been our mackerel - which has become very popular with our amazing customers in our online shop and in stockists nationwide.

A taste of the Atlantic
Mackerel, particularly Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus), is abundant in the cold, clean waters off Ireland’s west coast.

These fish are fast-swimming and oil-rich, giving them a distinctive flavour and tender texture that has earned them a reputation as a superfood or 'superfish'. High in omega-3 fatty acids and protein, mackerel is not only delicious but also highly nutritious, making it a popular choice for health-conscious consumers.

At Shines Seafood, mackerel is sourced from these same Atlantic waters, ensuring freshness and traceability. Our ethos centres on wild-caught fish and sustainable practices, reflecting both environmental responsibility and a commitment to preserving Ireland’s fishing heritage.

Our marvellous mackerel
Variety is the spice of life which is why we have lots of different types of mackerel products for you, catering to a wide range of tastes and culinary preferences. While all are derived from high-quality Atlantic mackerel, the preparation methods create different flavours.

1. Mackerel Fillets in Brine
This is perhaps the purest form available. Packed simply in water and salt, brined mackerel allows the natural flavour of the fish to shine through. It is ideal for salads, sandwiches, or as a protein-rich snack. The clean, slightly salty taste appeals to those who enjoy a more traditional seafood profile.

2. Mackerel in Spring Water (Low Salt)
For those seeking a lighter option, this variation reduces sodium content while maintaining the fish’s natural taste. It’s particularly popular among health-focused consumers who want all the benefits of mackerel without added salt.

3. Mackerel in Sunflower Oil
Oil-packed mackerel enhances richness and 'mouthfeel'. The sunflower oil complements the fish’s natural oils, creating a smoother, more indulgent texture. This type works well in pasta dishes or simply served on crusty bread.

4. Mackerel in Tomato Sauce
A classic favourite, this version combines the bold flavour of mackerel with a tangy tomato sauce. The result is a balanced, slightly sweet and savoury dish that is ready to eat straight from the tin—perfect for quick meals.

5. Hot Smoked Mackerel with Peppercorns
For a more gourmet experience, we have our hot smoked mackerel. The smoking process deepens the flavour, while peppercorns add a subtle spice. This variety is particularly popular on charcuterie boards or as part of a sophisticated starter.

These options highlight how a single fish can be transformed into multiple culinary experiences, each suited to different occasions and tastes.

Diet staple
We like to think of all our products as excellent additions to your diet and we hope you feel the same way. Our mackerel - whether enjoyed in its simplest brined form or as a richly smoked delicacy - is something we're very proud of!

For anyone seeking high-quality seafood with a story behind it, our range of mackerel products is well worth exploring.
